Eggheads: It has been confirmed, we are dying.

HI:

I am assuming you have your tongue firmly planted in your cheek in
that subject line however I think they've thrown down the proverbial
glove to eggdrop!

I had not been aware of this creation before however after a
preliminary glance through their website, I notice one glaring
omission; they have *NO* mission statement unless you can call their
want to give Python programmers a bot to program.

We've already seen what a "programmers" bot can be here at eggdrop.
Remember the horror of Eggdrop 2? Does anyone want to go there again?

The fact that people aren't ready to jump on the bandwagon and upgrade
to the newest latest greatest is really a tribute to the programmers
and coders here at eggheads. Always, I have known eggdrop to be a
stable bot, unstable releases were withdrawn immediately. That's a
sign of a design and coding team that can admit to making mistakes and
backtrack. Bravo to this team!

It has been a number years since I have had a reason to run and eggie,
and that I regret. I learned more about UNIX, computer, the Internet
and networking (security to) running my eggies than any computer tech
course could have taught.

About running on Windows, that's nothing to boast about. Unleashing a
stable bot on a platform with as many security vulnerabilities,
viruses and Trojans lurking in the foreground is just plain lunacy.
Voila! no need to code the bot into your virus... there's one already
available, developed by open source coders and able to spew even more
garbage, viruses and spam over IRC. Now let me make clear that I am
not casting doubt on the integrity of the other bot's coding team. I
am saying that they have not thought this through carefully enough.
Just because something can be done doesn't mean it should be done!

IRC bots are already viewed with suspicion outside a small community
of people who actually know what Eggdrop is about. We do not need
another bot out there which can be configured and setup by any
complete idiot who wants one.

Being a long-time IRC user and sometimes even channel owner and bot
admin I've learned one thing very clearly. Bots do not and cannot run
or administer a channel. They are a poor substitute for a human
channel op. They can be great tools and useful for the boring tedious
jobs that need doing and can respond faster to an emergent situation,
but never without human attention.

I'm proud of the tiny amount I've been able to add to Eggdrop (found
buried in the FAQ), and I want Eggdrop to continue to be the best and
most stable bot around.

Oh? It is already? Maybe that's why users aren't rushing out to
upgrade, because even older versions are stable enough to, like the
energizer bunny, it just keep running and running and running! My
experience was that it was usualy other outside problems that knocked
my Eggies off line and not its stability.

Eggdrop is a server, and servers meant to be used in some heavy duty
situations like Eggdrop is don't always perform optimally using an
upper level interpreted language. There are good reasons for coding
Eggdrop in C. Not only that but more than likely Eggddrop's memory
foot print will be much less than one coded in a scripting language.

Yes, I have already downloaded it and attempted to run it on my iBook
no less, and i'm not sure its worth the trouble to try to get it up
and running.

Personally the comments about other Open Source Projects is less than
professional and certainly NOT what I'd expect of this community.

That's my two cents worth of rant about this.

cheers, Eggdrop's not dying, its just better!

David
